What is SSD Hosting and what are the advantages?

SSD Hosting has been taking the Australian web hosting industry by storm over the past few years as SSD drives have become more cost effective for providers to implement. Every time you go to a website, files need to be read off a disk and from a database to be then sent over a network to a web browser.  Older, spinning hard drives will take a lot longer to retrieve the files and data before being able to process them and then send the request to your browser, making your website slower.  When your web hosting provider is powered by SSD drives, the seek time for the data to be retrieved by the disk is drastically reduced, getting your website to the end-users browser quicker.

Having no mechanical parts in the storage solution your provider is using is also of great advantage. Moving parts on traditional drives are a lot more prone to failure than the stationary nature of SSD web hosting. With less disk failures, there is a lot less chance your provider will have a RAID storage array failure, providing your website with higher availability.

Hosting Cloud only uses Enterprise grade SSD disks in it’s Australian cPanel website hosting servers.  Our top of the range Enterprise Dell web servers run enterprise grade SSD drives, which provide remarkable disk performance when compared to regular spinning disks. Our SSD’s run in RAID 10 arrays, providing even better speed and uptime.

How can SSD improve my website speed?

Websites are made up of thousands of files, each of which are located in different sectors of a servers storage array. When a traditional spinning hard drive needs to access these it needs to go back and forth to read each file preventing the servers CPU from being able to process these files into the website content that is then sent to the visitor to your website. SSD drives offer a magnitude higher IOPS (Input and Output Operations per Second) allowing the files to be accessed and provided to PHP for processing faster.

The end result of this is a drop in your time to first byte for your website visitors, allowing for your website to render faster in their browsers.

Is it important to host on Australian Servers?

Hosting near your target market is integral for any online business. When your website is hosted overseas, the initial request and response has to travel sometimes upwards of 300 milliseconds when an Australian end-user is attempting to access that website.  Each additional request (such as an image) also needs to travel up to or over 0.3 seconds before the data can be delivered back to a client viewing your webpage from within Australia.

By hosting your website in Australia, the time it takes for data to travel over the internet to your website visitor is greatly reduced, providing them with a better end-user experience.

Hosting in Australia also has many other benefits, such as the ability to use local support and by supporting an Australian owned business and being billed in Australian dollars (so that changes in the foreign exchange market do not adversely effect your pricing).

How do free SSL certificates work?

Free SSL certificates have become popular over the past year due to the rise of SSL providers such as Lets Encrypt.  These organisations have a common goal of trying to encrypt the majority of the web traffic over the internet to ensure that data communicated over the internet cannot be easily intercepted by a third-party.  Google (through their Chrome browser) has been a major backer of the LetsEncrypt movement and due to this Google started using HTTPS (SSL) as a low-scoring PageRank back in 2014 (https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2014/08/https-as-ranking-signal.html) meaning simply that Google will rank your website higher if you are using SSL to serve it.

We are big supporters of this movement and believe that anyone with a website contact form that provides you with personal information should definitely be using SSL (so that the data is encrypted when being sent to the server), this also applies to having an administrator login to your website as encrypting your login details when they are sent across the internet is paramount to security.  Due to these major security benefits, we provide free SSL certificates across all of our shared cPanel hosting services.

What are the benefits of unlimited traffic?

Traffic limitations have been commonplace in the web hosting industry since its inception. This has always been used by the provider to ensure that their upstream internet transit costs are managed, ensuring that if anyone used more than their allocated quota, that their site would be disabled.  A lot of this is attributed to the high cost of internet transit, especially when dealing with Australian based providers.

Many Australian cheap web hosting companies still use these quotas as part of their web hosting packages as a safety net for their own internet charges, or as a way to obtain additional money from their clients if they exceed the quota and then require more traffic on their plan.  At Hosting Cloud, we partner with providers who have the ability to source additional capacity when required at very low costs, allowing our clients to have an unlimited traffic allowance.

The benefit to you as the client is that you never need to worry about your website exceeded the allocated bandwidth quota, as there is none. If your website is busy we see that as being a good thing for your business.  Due to this we offer unlimited bandwidth so that your site can be viewed by as many visitors as possible.

What are the advantages of cPanel?

cPanel is the industry standard control panel for Linux based PHP hosting. Having been around since the early 2000’s it spent a lot of time competing with other commercial control panels such as Plesk and some open-source options such as Webmin as the best choice for a web hosting control panel. Over the past decade it has proven to be the dominant control panel due to the exceptional feature range and security for clients that the majority of web hosting providers now choose this as their product of choice for web hosting.

Some of the biggest advantages for cPanel are on the client side, rather than the server-side. The control panel makes it very easy for clients to migrate between web hosting providers using the inbuilt cPanel backups. These backups will create a copy of all of your website files, databases, emails, DNS services and passwords, creating a portable copy of your website that is easily transferred to another providers service (such as us!).

How does DDoS Protection help my website?

The malicious activity of DDoS (Distrubuted Denial of Service) attacks are known to be capable of taking down some of the largest websites in the world. If your website is hosted on a network that does not have DDoS protection, any website within that network can be targeted for DDoS which can then result in your website being offline for the duration of the attack.

As we know the threat of DDoS is a big one, especially in the Australian web hosting industry, we have engaged multiple upstream transit providers to provide our network with redundant DDoS protection capabilities (as we don’t believe you can ever just rely on one). This gives our network protection from multiple providers to ensure that even if one of these DDoS protection providers is having problems, that our network and your website is still protected.

Having your website offline for something you didn’t cause is not something we think is acceptable for you, or for us. Due to this we invest heavily in our protection systems to ensure your site is always online.

How do you migrate a website with zero downtime?

There is often a misconception amongst website owners that having to migrate your website means that there will be some downtime associated with the move. This is not the case! Our staff have decades of collective experience in the web hosting industry which has allowed for us to refine the migration process of your DNS, website and email to ensure that there is no data lost and no period of time in which your site is offline for the world.

Having performed tens of thousands of migrations for clients we are capable of any migration, whether it be migrating hundreds of accounts for a large reseller client, or migrating high traffic E-Commerce websites.  When we conduct a migration we have internal processes that plans the migration, making sure checks are in-place before proceeding.

Most of all, as part of a migration, we communicate with you, the client. This way you know every step of the way that your data is being looked after and your valuable intellectual property is in safe hands.

Why do you use CloudLinux?

CloudLinux has become the standard amongst cPanel Australian web hosts to ensure service stability across all hosting accounts. It’s primary function is to ensure that no single web hosting account can adversely affect all the other web hosting accounts on the same web hosting server. It achieves this by setting limits on the amount of CPU, RAM, disk IO and entry processes that each individual cPanel account can use.

This ensures that if one website is under a Denial of Service attack or is using excessive processes (whether it be human or machine generated), that the site cannot overload the server and every other account on it.  Instead, the misbehaving website will receive a “508 Resource Limit Is Reached” error message.

In addition to this, CloudLinux has some other great features such as the PHP Selector that it ships with. This allows for the end-user to be able to select the most compatible (or fastest) version of PHP and the modules associated with it, which is great compared to the one-size-fits all approach that most web hosting companies had to use before CloudLinux became such a standard part of cPanel shared web hosting.

CageFS is another wonderful feature that CloudLinux provides. This isolates every hosting account away from one another using kernel level jails that ensure that if a client account gets effected by malicious hacking attempts or malware, the account does not have any further ability to compromise any of the other hosting accounts on the same hosting server.

How do you protect against hacking attempts?

Our Australian cPanel shared web hosting service has a collection of mod_security rules that will block the IP address of an attacker upon a defined limit of incorrect login attempts for popular Content Management Systems. In addition to this all our servers have built in malware detection and exploit scanners. This allows for us to intercept malicious uploads as they occur and quarantine the malicious files based on the fingerprint of known malicious code, whilst also performing periodic checks of all website files that have been uploaded to website hosting accounts.

We find that the best protection for client’s sites however is initiated by the developer or client as keeping your CMS and plugins up to date is the best method of preventing your website from being hacked.
